She was launched in 1953 and built by Vickers Armstrong at their Newcastle High Walker yard on the Tyne for the Ellerman Lines. She was placed on the South African run, a role she would serve for the next 18 years. She would be sold in 1971 to the Karageorgis Lines of Greece and completely rebuilt into the car ferry MEDITERRANEAN SKY.
