S.S. American Star Poster

from £29.99

After over a decade of lay up in the bay of Elefsina, Greece, the future looked bleak for the former ocean liner. However in October of 1993, she was bought by the Chao Phraya Development & Transportation Company of Thailand who intended to use her as a floating five star hotel off Phuket.

She was renamed AMERICAN STAR and on the 22nd of December 1993, she departed Greece on the long tow to Thailand. While passing the Canary islands under tow by the Ukrainian flagged tug NEFTEGAZ 67 the towline parted in a gale and the derelict ended up washing ashore on the Western coast of Fuerteventura. Within 48 hours, she had broken in two aft of the funnel and was a total loss. Her wreck remained on site for years until finally succumbing to the powerful ocean swell in the late 2000s.
